The worst floods in the Balkans for a century have killed at least 47 people after the region’s most extreme rainfall in more than a century (when records began) inundated large swathes of Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia in recent days and unleashed more than 3,000 landslides that swept away homes and unearthed land mines from the region’s 1992-95 war. The flood waters are threatening Serbia’s main power plant – and the River Sava has burst its banks in many areas after months of rain fell in just three days. The death toll is expected to rise In Bosnia, and over 3,000 landslides have buried houses and disturbed landmines laid during the war in the 1990s. In one Bosnian town alone, Doboj, the mayor said more than 20 bodies had been taken to the mortuary. The floods are also affecting Croatia and at least 12 towns along Sava River have given warnings. Croatia has also evacuated thousands of people along Sava. The fresh evacution orders included one for the town of Obrenovac, where soldiers, police and volunteers worked around the clock to protect the coal-fired Nikola Tesla power plant, which supplies electricity for half of Serbia and most of the capital Belgrade.Emergency crews have so far protected the plant by building high walls of sandbags, but some of the barriers were destroyed when a powerful nine-foot-high surge of floodwater burst through them on Monday. In Bosnia, Foreign Minister Zlatko Lagumdzija called the flood damage “immense” and even compared it to the destruction during the country’s 1992-95 war. YOU CAN DONATE TO HELP THE FLOOD VICTIMS HERE  and HERE and HERE our friends at the Exit Festival have told us that  a lot of scheduled artists in the region for solo concerts and/or festivals in this area already gave up a part or their full fees in order to help this cause in a move spearheaded by Punk Rocker Billy Idol – https://twitter.com/BillyIdol/status/468308657315135488 who said “I’m playing in Serbia soon I will donate part of my earnings from that nights gig to a relief fund, hope that might help in some small way”  and Ben’s band, the Pig Ignerents who are playing Exit in July are supporting this.  In the UK the Croatian Embassy is also collecting bedlinen, clothes, food, hygiene products and other items which Croatian Airlines will fly to Croatia for free. Money donations are collected through Croatian Red Cross (for all three countries), there is online donation link and PDF instructions in English  http://www.hck.hr/en/page/emergency-appeal-for-flood-affected-areas-in-croatia-415
